PATERSON — The state is moving to shut down the Market Street funeral home known as Martinez’s Funeraria Latina, after the owner pleaded guilty to bilking poor clients with excessive burial expenses.

The owner, Manuel E. Martinez, admitted in state Superior Court in Paterson earlier this month that he took advantage of a state program that helps poor people pay for funeral expenses. As part of his plea deal, Martinez agreed to pay back $56,150 he fraudulently billed to the state, and to forfeit his funeral director’s license when he is sentenced on Nov. 6.
