While the extra tutoring isn't cheap, it's not costing the family a dime. Under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, nearly 2 million children nationwide are eligible for free tutoring in math and language arts every year through a component called Supplemental Education Services.

In New Jersey, less than one in every seven eligible students in New Jersey joins, according to the most recent data from the 2006-2007 school year. Only 16,732 students participated, but 122,926 could have.
