By MICHAEL AMSEL A township family hopes a recent trip to Washington, D.C., as part of Family Advocacy Day will result in continued Medicaid assistance for their daughter and other children who require specialized care at children's hospitals. Heather Valeo, whose 5-year-old daughter, Isabella, suffers from a rare chromosomal abnormality that affects her motor and cognitive skills, testified before federal lawmakers about the need for assistance. Isabella has experienced drastic improvement through her experiences and treatments at Children's Specialized Hospital in Toms River, and her family is concerned about future health care costs and access to specialized care. There is a bill pending in Washington that would stop implementation of rule changes to Medicaid totaling $12 billion to $15 billion in cuts to health coverage for children. The proposed changes would drastically reduce health care programs such as rehabilitation services and transportation of disabled children to and from schools.
