Nicole C. Brambila César Chávez championed the rights of the poor and oppressed. And if the iconic farmworker leader were alive today, he’d advocate for gay civil rights, says his granddaughter, Christine Chávez. Forty years ago, César Chávez organized farmworkers in Coachella, which led to contracts with growers and better pay and working conditions for those who stooped in the fields. What few know today, is that Chávez supported civil rights for all. His granddaughter – who travels the state to speak on marriage equality for gays and lesbians – will share at a town hall discussion about defending the long-fought-for civil right to marry that the California Supreme Court recently upheld in a 4-3 decision last Month.
