By ANGELA DELLI SANTI New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, D-NJ, is leading the charge against President Bush's proposal to lift a ban on offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, saying the plan will not give consumers relief from skyrocketing gasoline prices. Bush said American families are looking to Washington for help as gas prices surpass $4 per gallon in many places. He is calling on Congress to lift the quarter-century-old ban, saying it could eventually yield up to 18 billion barrels of oil. Republican presidential candidate John McCain supports the plan, while Democrat Barack Obama opposes it. |
