By BRANDON LAUSCH Demonstrators who have protested the proposed closing of acute-care services at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center are planning a Thursday event across from the hospital that organizers have billed as both a community watch and a form of street theater. "The goal is to engage people, the passersby, and engage the hospital in a way that says, "We're here,' " said the Rev. Carolyn Eklund of Grace Episcopal Church. "There's been a threat to our city and to your institution here." Scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the 12-hour event is expected to feature small groups of people — perhaps two, maybe a half dozen — who will volunteer in two-hour shifts to perform, sing, read aloud or dress in costume to symbolize community members who could be most affected by the closing, such as expectant mothers or senior citizens, organizers said. |
