By HEATHER HADDON PATERSON -- After spending nearly $10,000 on a trade school, the last thing Danielle Johnson wanted to hear from a Parsippany electrical union was that she needed to take algebra classes to join. Refusing to give up, the Paterson mother found a state program to pay for the credits she needs. And after Johnson lobbied the state, the free instruction to become a union apprentice will begin in Passaic County next week. Funded by a $300,000 grant from the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the program begins at the HoHoKus School of Trade and Technical Sciences on Market Street in Paterson on Monday. It will teach 30 women and minorities a building trade and how to jump through the hoops of joining a local union. Those who already graduated from the school but need help in the union application process can attend just half-day training sessions.
