More than 1,000 impassioned opponents of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center's planned closing filled the Plainfield High School auditorium last night for a second public hearing on the issue.

As they did last month at a similar hearing, residents, elected officials, doctors and clergy members from Plainfield and surrounding towns shouted, waved signs and offered personal stories, urging the facility remain a full-service hospital.

"I'm an asthmatic, and Muhlenberg hospital saved my life many, many times," said Christian Estevez, a resident and member of the Plainfield Board of Education, who was one of many to speak at the meeting.
