Gov. Jon Corzine is expected to tap former Washington, D.C., school superintendent Clifford Janey to lead Newark's public schools, according to two sources familiar with the governor's decision.

Before calling Janey with the offer, Corzine will have a final meeting with Newark Mayor Cory Booker today at Drumthwacket to discuss the decision, the sources said.

A formal announcement is planned for early next week, according to the sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the choice.

The nomination would go to the state Board of Education for final approval, possibly at its next scheduled meeting on June 18. The 41,000-student district has been under state operation since 1995, giving the state the power to hire and fire its superintendent.
