A classroom in a hallway, special education students crammed into a room little bigger than a closet and students trying to learn on the balcony of a school auditorium.

That's what Gov. Jon Corzine saw yesterday during a tour of Newark's Oliver Street School.

He led a group of local and state officials through the school. The building, constructed in 1869, is one of the city's most crowded.

It's also one of six schools in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood that are more than 100 years old. One was built in 1848, 17 years before President Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
