Once they were an accepted fact of life in Trenton, but soon they will number only 17.

On July 1, when Wilda Diaz replaces Joseph Vas as mayor of Perth Amboy, the ranks of the dual officeholders will shrink by one.

This may not be good for Vas' checking account, but it's welcome news for taxpayers. No longer will Vas be collecting two government paychecks -- one for being mayor and one for being a state assemblyman.
