MyCentralJersey.com Fourth-grade pupil Essence Daniels feels firefighters are important to the community because they risk their own lives every day. "They carry 100 pounds of equipment. They have a dangerous but important job. They practice cutting metal with the Jaws of Life," said Essence, a pupil at the James J. Flynn Elementary School. "Firefighters, they care for us and never let us down," agreed third-grader D'Angelo Morales. "I thank God we have firefighters." Essence and D'Angelo were among 15 third- and fourth-grade pupils at the Flynn School presented with new bicycles and helmets Thursday as winners of an essay contest sponsored by the Professional Latino Firefighters of Central New Jersey. As part of the contest, the children were asked to write about why firefighters are important to the community. Sammy Arroyo, a Perth Amboy firefighter and president of the Professional Latino Firefighters of Central New Jersey, said the organization has members from several communities including Perth Amboy, New Brunswick, Monroe and Edison.
