The former chief of the Washington, D.C., public schools is the front-runner to be Newark's next school superintendent, as the search process moves into a flurry of high-level talks in the coming days.

One of three finalists for the job announced this week, former Washington superintendent Clifford Janey, was the first choice of all but one of the 16-member search committee, according to three people who were there. They asked to remain anonymous because they signed confidentiality agreements.
