By AVA GACSER PERTH AMBOY —When Jesus "Jay' Martinez, 40, tried out as a contestant for NBC's hit show "American Gladiators,' he figured he might get some ribbing about his age from his colleagues in the Perth Amboy Police Department. He wasn't prepared, however, for the stir he created when he donned the show's snug spandex uniform. "I did send a picture of me in the whole uniform out to one of my buddies in the department, and what does he do? He downloads it to his computer,' Martinez, a city resident, explained. "Next thing you now, he put it on every screen saver in the department. When I got back, I was in this tight spandex on every computer.' If Martinez's background as a 16-year veteran of the police department and a former Marine isn't example enough of his tenacity, the show's arduous tryout process certainly should be. The cop said he waited 14 hours to show producers what he was made of.               |
