Ruth Alvarez has been awarded the New Brunswick Knights of Columbus Community Award for teacher of the year. Alvarez is a Spanish teacher at the New Brunswick High School. She is also a co-pastor with her husband, Alfredo, at Remanente Field Church in New Brunswick.

Alvarez originally came from Nicaragua, arriving in the United States to start her career. Since 1986, when Alvarez started teaching at New Brunswick High School, she has used her position as Spanish teacher to not only get students to understand a language, but also comprehend the importance and meaning of learning a second language and to internalize the culture behind it, Alvarez said.
