By HEATHER HADDON PATERSON -- The state will convene its first public hearing about the closure of Barnert Hospital eight months after the hospital first filed for bankruptcy protection. On Tuesday, the state Health Planning Board will hear testimony about whether Paterson needs a second emergency room to absorb the 20,000 visits that Barnert processed a year. The century-old hospital on Broadway closed in February. The state will listen to comments on an application submitted by Peter Betts, Barnert's former CEO, to lease a part of the Broadway hospital to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for emergency and behavioral health services. Betts' application was written before Community Healthcare Associates LLC, a conglomerate of health consultants based in Bloomfield, bought the hospital.
