PASSAIC -- Colene Daniel, the new president and CEO of St. Mary's Hospital, believes in universal health care.

One of the reasons she accepted the job was that the Catholic medical institution has a history of caring for the medically uninsured, Daniel said by telephone Monday, her first day on the job.

"There are very few hospitals in the country dedicated to providing health care to patients irrespective of their ability to pay," said the 53-year-old Cincinnati native who moved to New Jersey from Baltimore. "I do believe you can provide health care to everyone and still be a viable operation."
