NEWARK PROMOTES 14 POLICE LIEUTENANTS

Newly-promoted lieutenants will now mentor and train next generation of police officers

Newark, NJ - April 9, 2008 - Mayor Cory A. Booker announced the promotion of 14 lieutenants, who received their new badges at a City Hall ceremony today.

In a Municipal Council Chamber ceremony packed with family, friends, and police leadership, Mayor Booker, Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Ron Salahuddin, Police Director Garry F. McCarthy, Police Chief Anthony S. Campos, Council Members Augusto Amador, Carlos Gonzalez, and Anibal Ramos, and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura congratulated the newly-promoted lieutenants. All of the newly-promoted lieutenants are male. Eight are Caucasian, three African-American, and three Latino.

“These 14 new lieutenants have defined valor, commitment, and courage everyday while they protect and serve our community.  Today we are calling upon them to manifest their leadership qualities to inspire and mentor our next generation of police officers that are emerging from our Academy to continue to eradicate crime in Newark,” said Mayor Booker. In his remarks, Mayor Booker compared the valor and heroism of today’s police officers with the men and women who served America in battles like Bunker Hill, the Argonne, Midway, and recalled the closing words of Abraham Lincoln’s second Inaugural Address, calling police work a “sacred effort.”

“We will prove to the nation who Newark is as a city,” the Mayor continued. “As police lieutenants you are the miracle workers of today and will make Newark stand for peace, honor, justice, love, and security.”

“Today I am proud to recognize and promote 18 of our first line supervisors, each of whom have studied hard and worked diligently in proving not only their academic prowess of the job but demonstrating fine leadership qualities in our precincts and neighborhoods as well. These new promotees have earned the respect and admiration of their peers and subordinates alike and will now endeavor on a new level of responsibility and accountability as they rise to the rank of Lieutenant. I congratulate them and their families for the hard work and sacrifices that have brought them to this point. I am confident that they will continue to uphold their commitment to this Department and most importantly the residents of this City through their fine service and exemplary leadership,” said Director McCarthy.

After the speeches, Deputy City Clerk Ken Louis swore the new lieutenants into their duties, and each one had a family member come up and pin their new badge of rank on their uniform. Newly-promoted Lt. Robert Purcell Jr. received his badge from his father, retired Newark Police Sgt. Robert Purcell Sr.
