PLEASANTVILLE - A majority of abstentions stopped the revolving door of the superintendent's office - for now.
The Board of Education came out of executive session Wednesday night and promptly introduced a resolution asking that Clarence Alston's contract not be renewed when the three-year contract expires Aug. 31, 2009. Since 1997, there have been 13 superintendents in the district. Some were acting or interim; none lasted long.

Board member Harriet Jackson made the motion for the nonrenewal, with Joanne Famularo seconding it. Jerome Page and board President Doris Graves also backed the measure. However, there were then abstentions from five board members: David Thomas, Melanie Griffin, LeAnn Rock, Marlon Bradshaw Jr. and Vice President Julio Sanchez Jr.
