Hispanic Business Council Scholarship Foundation of NJ, Inc. Celebrates Its 17th Year Awarding
  Scholarships to Students & Honoring Community Leaders

Teaneck – In its continuing effort to assist more Hispanic youths in furthering their education, the Hispanic Business Council Scholarship Foundation of NJ announced today that, on Thursday, April 25, it will present $30,000 in scholarships to current New Jersey college and college-bound Hispanic students.  The Scholarships will be presented at the Foundation’s 17th Annual Scholarship Gala to be held at The Venetian in Garfield, New Jersey.  The Annual Gala serves as the major fundraiser for the Scholarship Foundation.

Six scholarships of $4,000 each and one scholarship of $2,000 will be disbursed directly to the schools of the students’ choice on their behalf over the 2008-2009 school term, as long as the student remains enrolled full time and maintains a 3.0 GPA.  The scholarship recipients will be required to complete 80 hours of community service between June 2008 and June 2009.  In addition, the Scholarship Foundation is awarding four students a $1,000 book stipend to each one.

The total awarded since 1993 has exceeded $195,000.  This year, the following students will receive scholarships:
• Mr. Angel Andujar from North Bergen - attending Rutgers University
• Mr. Gabriel Cummings from Union City – attending Rutgers University
• Mr. Daniel Diaz from Cliffside Park – attending Bergen Community College
• Ms. Besi Henriquez from Elizabeth – attending Seton Hall University
• Ms. Daisy Herrera from Newark – attending Berkeley College
• Ms. Silvana Rivas from Secaucus – attending Felician College
• Ms. Daisy Gabriela Romo from South Plainfield – attending William Paterson University

The following students will be receiving book stipends:
• Ms. Alicia Gomez from Wayne – attending Montclair State University
• Mr. Francisco Matute from Union City – attending New Jersey City University
• Ms. Maria Rosa from Paterson – attending Felician College
• Elvia Santos from Paterson – attending William Paterson University

In addition, three individuals will be recognized at this year’s Gala on April 25, 2008 as leaders in the community:
Ms. Maria Gobo, Executive Director - Leeward International, Inc.
Mr. Jorge Machado, President – ColAmerica, Inc.
Mr. Tomas Padilla, Captain – Hackensack Police Department
