| Hoboken Comes to Union City |

By ANTOINETTE MARTIN Something big is going up in this small-scale city: a 15-story, 151-unit amenity-laden condominium set close by the western end of the Lincoln Tunnel. The Thread Building, as it is known, gets its name from Union City’s past as the “embroidery capital” of the United States. Its appearance on the scene follows a strong wave of more modestly sized residential development over the past five years. “There have been a lot of great little buildings going up,” said Marshall Weisman of MW Development, the Thread Building’s developer. “This one, the first one you will see when you come out of the LincolnTunnel, is the perfect one to lead the way to the next level.” The building is evidence that developers are still betting on the “Hobokenization” of Union City. The process began about five years ago, which was roughly when Hoboken’s transformation seemed a fait accompli, with dozens of developers rushing to begin projects in this solidly blue-collar city.
