STAR-LEDGER Judy Postmus came to Rutgers University's School of Social Work in 2006 with one goal in mind: to train social workers to recognize and deal with the victims of domestic violence, including child abuse. She is well on her way to reaching her goal. Postmus is director of the Center on Violence Against Women and Children in the school of social work. She is also an assistant professor who teaches courses on family violence. Her program has received a $100,000 endowment from Verizon Wireless to create a scholarship fund that will award scholarships to three Rutgers graduate students who are working toward their master's degrees in social work, with a specialization in violence against women and children. The center has also received a $200,000 grant from Verizon to create a continuing education program for social workers to take courses and learn how to recognize and handle domestic violence victims. The continuing education program will eventually be open to all professionals who need to understand and recognize victims of domestic violence and child abuse.
