Perth Amboy's annual Waterfront Festival, which began 20 summers ago as a way to bring residents together and to welcome visitors, has been canceled.

The Perth Amboy Chamber of Commerce told the city council last week that its July event will not go on. It did not offer any explanation. Calls to Yvonne Taylor, the president of the chamber, were not returned.

Mayor Joseph Vas said he suspects that the growing number of public celebrations in Perth Amboy each summer made it harder for the organizers of the city's oldest festival to attract sponsors.
