PASSAIC -- Rocio Carmona said she has lost about 15 pounds since last year. But the key to her success was not some radical fad diet. It was her son's school.

Last year, Marta Febres, School 8 parent liaison, started an exercise and nutrition program for parents in the community. Free of charge, parents can come to the Fourth Street elementary school for a 30-minute workout Tuesday and Thursday mornings and for a nutrition class on Fridays. It costs the school nothing extra to run the class since it is held during school hours and the instructor, physical education teacher Jo Ann Davidowicz, donates her time.

Carmona, 26, whose 6-year-old son is in first grade, attends every week. Now her son is becoming an avid exerciser, too.
