CITY OF NEWARK AND CATHOLIC HEALTH EAST TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON HEALTH CARE ISSUES AT OLIVER STREET SCHOOL, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, AT 6 P.M.

Community meeting will seek residents’ input on providing health care for East Ward

Newark, NJ - January 31, 2008 - Mayor Cory A. Booker, East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, and members of the Catholic Health East leadership team will hold a public forum at Oliver Street School, located at 114 Oliver Street, tomorrow, Friday, February 1, at 6 p.m. to seek East Ward residents’ input on how to continue to provide quality health care for the Ironbound community after the planned service cutbacks for St. James Hospital take hold.

The forum is the result of a partnership created by the City and Catholic Health East in the wake of the latter organization’s purchase of St. James, St. Michael’s and Columbus Hospitals, and their plans to reduce services at St. James Hospital and close Columbus Hospital. The partnership is designed to address the health care and economic impacts of these measures on the affected East and North Ward communities, and ensure that residents continue to receive quality health care.
