Just one out of 22 applications for new charter schools has been approved by the state, the smallest number of approvals yet for the decade-old charter school movement, state officials announced today.

The lone approval is the Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities, a middle school planned for Trenton that will start with about 180 students. The school is slated to open next fall.
