By JULIET FLETCHER VINELAND - It has been in operation for three weeks, but the elementary school formerly known as the Community School now has a proper name. In a night that saw impassioned speeches from the public, and then rounds of tense voting, names of prominent Hispanic leaders were narrowed down to just one, the name of a Spanish-language teacher and community activist who died tragically at 43. The newly named Gloria Sabater elementary school, one of six demonstration-school projects created statewide, has already changed the face of the center-city block along Southeast Boulevard and Montrose Street where it sits. Sabater, who died of cancer in 1994, taught Spanish for 21 years at the Vineland High School 9-10 building. She also administered the local Tiny Tim fund, which offsets medical bills for children, and worked with an intervention program for first-time offenders.
