The academic discipline of childhood studies, still in infancy, is taking its first significant steps in South Jersey.

Approved by Rutgers University in April 2006, the program is based at the Camden campus. It launched its first semester this past fall with a pool of students who are using their intellectual skills and affinity for children to tackle some big problems.

It's the first such Ph.D. program in the United States, which has lagged behind other countries in recognizing the importance of childhood and its impact on lifelong issues.
