| Abbott districts should prepare to tighten belts |

PRESS OF ATLANTIC CITY Former Vineland Board of Education member Joaquin Martinez always was a bit leery about how the school district would spend all the money promised by the Abbott v. Burke decision. Back in the late 1990s, the promise of millions of extra dollars seemed almost too good to be true, and Martinez constantly worried what would happen if the state money suddenly stopped. The 31 Abbott districts may be about to find out. State aid has been shrinking, and next year most of the Abbotts are slated to get just 2 percent more aid under the new school-funding plan approved last week. Now the same problems generated by giving out money so quickly may be repeated by cutting off the funds so fast.
