NJ school funding plan stalls in Senate, one vote needed PDF Print E-mail

The Assembly voted 41-36 today to approve Gov. Jon Corzine's new school funding formula, but the identical Senate version remains stalled, one vote short of passage.

With the Senate voting board left open, the tally stood at 20-19, with one member, Sen. Walter Kavanaugh (R-Somerset) unable to attend the session because of illness. It takes 21 votes to pass a bill in the Senate. That left it to supporters of the school aid bill to try to convince one of the senators who voted "no" to change his or her vote to "yes."
