Ask Crystal Evans, the 43-year-old legislative aide who won election in November and she'll give it to you straight. "It's an opportunity for other African Americans, and Latinos and Asians, to look up and say, "If she can do it, I can do it,' " the Democratic councilwoman said. "You're a role model. That's what it means. It's encouraging and makes you feel like you're paving the way, like Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou, and so many other people."
