After the votes were counted on election night, three up-and-comers stood triumphantly on the stage of a gaudy wedding hall here celebrating their victory in state legislative races in the 29th District, which includes most of Newark and the neighboring Township of Hillside.

“We showed that when we are united, no one can divide us,” boomed Teresa Ruiz, a 33-year-old county employee who, in taking the seat once held by former Mayor Sharpe James of Newark, becomes the Senate’s sole Hispanic member.
