For Immediate Release DIVISION OF RECREATION/CULTURAL AFFAIRS SCHEDULE OF UPCOMING PROGRAMS African Dance Classes, Winter Golf, Adult Basketball heat up February Newark, NJ - February 1, 2008 - Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Division of Recreation/ Cultural Affairs announced the division’s schedule of programs and events for the next three weeks. The schedule runs as follows: AFRICAN DANCE CLASSES for Families: Going on now at the Boylan Recreation Center every Thursday from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., African Dance instruction will be offered weekly. This pilot program will feature a drummer and is conducted by a seasoned instructor - Mama Yaa. Classes are limited to 25 persons. LIFE SKILLS Classes for Children aged eight to 11: Going on through Friday, February 22, the Boylan Recreation Center is offering free Life Skills classes for 15 youngsters aged eight to 11, to help them with such issues as self esteem; building confidence; dealing with stress; communication and social skills. These classes are intended to keep them from developing bad habits and help them make wise life choices. The instructors come from Family Connection, a Maplewood-based social service agency that has collaborated with the Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs in the past. Light refreshments are served. BALLROOM DANCING Classes for Adults: Due to popular demand, the division is offering Adult classes in Ballroom Dance at the Rotunda Recreation Center, at 75 Clifton Avenue, on Thursday evenings from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Classes are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis to adults aged 18 and up, and the class is limited to 30 persons. WINTER GOLF for Youth: The City of Newark’s Smart Golf/Hook-A-Kid on Golf Intermediate and Advanced Training Program has begun, and will continue until March 19. The Smart Golf program is aimed at newcomers to the sport, while the Intermediate and Advanced Program is a follow-up for youngsters who attended the city’s basic golf programs this summer. The program is open to Newark children aged 8 to 16. The program takes place at two sites: the Boylan Recreation Center at 916 South Orange Avenue on Mondays, and the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center at 211 West Kinney Street on Wednesdays, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The program is co-ed, and participants learn a variety of golf techniques from certified golf instructors, provided by Newark Youth Golf, Inc. Equipment is provided by the Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs. The intermediate and advanced program involves the children who already received free golf clubs provided by the division’s summer Golf program. ART CLASSES, “Drawing Plus: Media Survey:” for Children: Newark youngsters aged 11-16 can learn how to draw self-portraits, landscapes, and much more. Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays, at the Ironbound Recreation Center, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Tuesdays at Boylan Street Recreation Center, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Class size is limited to 20 students. Kennedy Aquatic Center and Ironbound Aquatic Center from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, based upon Water Safety Instructor (WSI) availability. Parents of team participants will be able to choose the most convenient schedule for their children. Recreation is embarking on a new day in Aquatics for the City of Newark with an earlier opening ideal for Adult & Senior Learn-to-Swim lessons, as well as offering for the first time Corporate, Master and Senior. Master Lap Swims for former swimming competitors; those who love early swim workouts, and those interested in maintaining a healthy mind and body. Classes are offered from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the JFK Pool and from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Ironbound pool, Monday through Friday. The JFK Aquatic Center is now open at 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, with closing hours of 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., remaining the same. FREE YOUTH COACHES Training: The Division of Recreation offers training courses for adults who would like to serve as coaches, administrators, or officials in youth sports. The classes are certified by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, and all persons who complete the classes will receive a certificate in that class, which recognizes the participant as an official member, which also insures them against liability. EVENING ADULT WORKOUT Programs: Stretch your body and relieve the stress of a hard day at work before going home with the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center’s Evening Adult Workout Programs. These classes are provided by the PowerZone and the Recreation Center’s Get Fit Challenge. FREE Swimming, Basketball, Weightlifting, and Physical Exercise programs take place Monday through Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the recreation center, and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. STREET HOCKEY for Youth: Street Hockey games for Newark youngsters aged 8 to 12 are taking place at the JFK Recreation Center Mondays, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For details, contact Andréa Mason at (973) 733-3620. HOMEWORK AND TECHNOLOGY for Youth: All recreation centers offer Newark youngsters free access to computers and tutoring to help them with homework and to learn modern technology, Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adults can participate based on registration: Adult times will be announced. NEWARK DISTANCE CLASSIC for Youth and Adults: This annual 5K and 20K run has been moved to Sunday, March 9, 2008, starting at 9:30 a.m. Awards will be given out for the top three male and female overall finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in various age groups. Businesses, schools, colleges, and other groups may compete with male, female, or co-ed teams for top three finishers in the “team” categories. The race is certified by the USA Track Federation for New Jersey. All registrations postmarked before March 2, 2008, are $20. Registrations postmarked after that cost $25. USATF-NJ members take a $2.00 discount on registration. Registration closes at 9 a.m. on race day, Sunday, March 9, 2008. Everyone competing in the run will receive a race souvenir t-shirt. Runners muster for the race by 9 a.m. at Rutgers University Gymnasium (Golden Dome), located at 42 Warren Street, Newark, New Jersey. The Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs is seeking volunteers to serve on race day to assist with registration, man water stops, and serve as race marshals.
